Practice smoking analysis

This spreadsheet is a progress report of the IPIF Smoking indicator for the quarter. It includes lists of patients who have not had their smoking status recorded and current or recently quit smokers who have not been given brief advice. View a sample report (pdf 451kb) A description of each sheet follows.

Summary

This sheet shows a combination of the work done so far this quarter and the progress against the IPIF target.

The first number is the total patients in the age range under consideration in the PHO, the second is the number of those patients who have had their smoking status recorded. The percentage of patients with their smoking status recorded is further down; this is the prerequisite indicator for the Brief Advice indicator.

The next figure is the number of current smokers: these are patients whose last smoking status was one that is classified by IPIF as a current smoker. This is followed by the number of patients who are current smokers who were recorded in the PHO system (i.e., by Karo) as being a current smoker at any time in the previous 4 quarters. If a practice has only recently discovered that a patient is recently quit then they will still need to record that they have given them brief advice.

The next figure is the number of patients who have been given brief advice, each patient is only counted once so if a patient has been given brief advice multiple times they are still only counted once. This means that counts done by the practice may sometimes be larger than this number. Note the brief advice cut off is fifteen months before the quarter end date, so at the beginning of the quarter in the baseline report this number will be 4/5 of what it was at the end of the previous quarter.

The next number is the number of patients who have been given cessation support.

Below that is the actual percentage of patients given brief advice which is simply the number of patients given brief advice divided by the number of current smokers and recently quit.

The last number is the important "Number to do to reach the MoH target".
